1942 GMT - Not really a session today...just rest. Today was a rest day, and I needed it. I was chastised a bit by my personal trainer, Paul, for running yesterday. I should have rested yesterday too. Hamstrings are still a little sore, but I'm feeling better. Tomorrow is an interval session, but if my hamstrings are still bothering me, I will pass on the intervals and just do an easy run, if I do anything at all.
Part of me is freaking out at the prospect of taking extra rest days (which is why I ran yesterday)...how can I complete this marathon, if I'm resting when I should be training? However, it is early in my program. I need to remember to listen to my body. I won't achieve my goals for this race if I am injured. It is better to take an extra rest day now, than many more later on.

Hi Patrick! Good move resting when you need to. I know a specialist in this field and she says the number one issue with runners is they don't listen to what their bodies are telling them. In the end that's why they can't run anymore because they abused their bodies. Listen to your trainer. You will feel so much better on your next run. You can do it! Be patient. I don't think too much patience is in your gene pool so you'll have to be extra careful not to over do trying to achieve. Mom
ReplyDeletePatrick,
ReplyDeleteRest is a requirement for marathon training. You either get it now or later (after injury), take your pick. I usually get by on only 3-4 running days per week. Not sure what your plan has you doing.
My garmin HRM also spikes sometimes (~25% of the time) at the beginning of my run. I have my readout in %MHR and sometimes will will jump up to 95%. I haven't figured this out yet, but it gradually comes down to normal, which is what looks like happened to you. I don't have any gel, I use the 'spit' method for lube for my HRM.
Just be cautious to put the HRM on the correct way. Once I put it on upside down and was amazed that I was running at a HR of 45. Realizing something was wrong, I stopped and found the problem. Which was a pain - stripping down in freezing weather trying to flip the HRM.
Keep up the good work. It is worth all the effort. All of my speed work last year has not gone away. My run this morning was probably a minute per mile faster than I could do last year. I find that the first interval of the session is the hardest and they get easier as they tick away. Then when you start running easy again after the intervals, your pace is faster than you realize.
I now believe that we are able to run faster - you just have to get over the psychological part of it first. After that, the physiological part of it comes along soon after.
Keep running,
Bill F.
